Transphobia is an irrational fear of, and/or hostility towards, people who are transgender or who otherwise transgress traditional gender norms. Because lesbians and gay men often transgress gender norms, it is often associated with homophobia.
It's not just transsexuals who are discriminated against in the transgender community. It's the transvestites, drag kings/queens, etc. The hostility that is put towards transgender people is probably due to the closed minded way people grew up believing what gender was. Children are raised to believe that gender and sex is the same thing. Gender is the mental aspect and sex is the physical aspect.
There is a popular belief that transgender people are inferior to cis-gender people. Which is kind of what I grew up thinking, but didn't realize that there were FTMs when I was 6 years old. The thing I never took away was discrimination against transgender people.
It's been my belief that discrimination is distilled into a child based upon the reaction of the parents which seems to be the case.
